✦ THE STORY BEHIND THIS RUG
This rug was woven by a woman.
Not in a factory. Not by machine. But by hand — on a loom, at home, in a village in Anatolia. Decades ago, Turkish women wove these rugs either to furnish their own homes or to contribute to the family's income. Each pattern was chosen by the weaver herself, each knot tied with her own hands. No two rugs were ever identical, because no two women wove the same way.
We source these rugs directly from old homes and private collectors across Turkey — places where these pieces have rested for 40, 50, sometimes 60 years. When we find one, it begins a journey before it reaches you.
First, we shake out decades of dust. Then we carefully shear the pile — what we call "hav" in Turkish — to bring the surface back to an even, clean finish. The rug is then washed and goes through a series of restoration steps. Finally, the edges are hand-stitched to ensure it arrives in your home structurally sound and ready to use.
What you receive is not just a rug. It is a one-of-a-kind textile that survived decades, was made by someone's hands, and was carefully prepared to live another chapter — in your home.
You will never find another exactly like it.
✦ ABOUT THIS RUG
This semicircle rug was cut from an authentic Isparta carpet, hand-knotted in the Isparta region of southwestern Turkey sometime between the 1970s and 1980s. Isparta has been one of Turkey's most important carpet-weaving centers for over a century, known for its refined floral compositions and rich dye traditions.
The field of this piece glows with a warm peach rose — softer than its original dye but still very much present, more alive than many of its sister pieces. The floral vine motifs across the field are clearly legible: loose, scrolling flowers and leaves in dusty rose, sage green, and ivory, arranged with the relaxed confidence of a weaver who knew exactly what she was doing. The wide border carries large circular medallions on an ivory ground, each one a complete floral composition in warm camel, dusty rose, and sage, outlined in deep navy and dark brown. A narrow geometric running band frames the medallion row above and below.
The overall palette — warm peach, camel, dusty rose, sage, ivory — is soft and earthy, effortlessly at home with natural wood, linen, stone, and terracotta. Condition is good overall — pile is low and even after professional shearing and washing, edges are hand-stitched, and the piece is fully ready to use.
✦ THE MEANING BEHIND THE PATTERN
What makes this piece unusual among Isparta semicircle rugs is the relative clarity of both its field and its border — the aging has been gentle here, and both layers of the design remain visible and expressive.
The floral vine that moves through the field is one of the oldest continuous motifs in Anatolian textile tradition — organic, flowing, and deeply personal. In Isparta, it became a way of bringing the garden indoors: a living thing rendered in wool. In Anatolian weaving tradition, the vine carried meaning beyond ornament. Its unbroken, looping movement represented continuity — the thread that connects one generation to the next.
The circular medallions in the border speak a different language. The circle has no beginning and no end — in Islamic decorative tradition, it was a symbol of eternity and the divine. A weaver who chose circular medallions for her border was reaching for something larger than decoration: she was placing her work within a tradition that stretched back centuries, announcing that this rug belonged to something enduring.
Together, the flowing vine and the perfect circle create a rug that holds both the personal and the eternal — the garden and the cosmos — on the same small surface.
