✦ THE STORY BEHIND THIS RUG
This rug was woven by a woman.
Not in a factory. Not by machine. But by hand — on a loom, at home, in a village in Anatolia. Decades ago, Turkish women wove these rugs either to furnish their own homes or to contribute to the family's income. Each pattern was chosen by the weaver herself, each knot tied with her own hands. No two rugs were ever identical, because no two women wove the same way.
We source these rugs directly from old homes and private collectors across Turkey — places where these pieces have rested for 40, 50, sometimes 60 years. When we find one, it begins a journey before it reaches you.
First, we shake out decades of dust. Then we carefully shear the pile — what we call "hav" in Turkish — to bring the surface back to an even, clean finish. The rug is then washed and goes through a series of restoration steps. Finally, the edges are hand-stitched to ensure it arrives in your home structurally sound and ready to use.
What you receive is not just a rug. It is a one-of-a-kind textile that survived decades, was made by someone's hands, and was carefully prepared to live another chapter — in your home.
You will never find another exactly like it.
✦ ABOUT THIS RUG
This semicircle rug was cut from an authentic Isparta carpet, hand-knotted in the Isparta region of southwestern Turkey sometime between the 1970s and 1980s. Isparta has been one of Turkey's most important carpet-weaving centers for over a century, known for its refined floral compositions and rich dye traditions.
The field of this piece is a warm peach salmon — softer and more faded than the original dye, but still present and alive. Across it, a flowing floral vine moves in dusty rose, sage green, and ivory, more legible than in some of its sister pieces — you can still trace the individual flowers and leaves as the weaver drew them. The wide border carries large oval floral medallions on an ivory ground, each one filled with layered blooms in rust, camel, and sage, outlined in deep navy and dark brown. A narrow running pattern of small geometric forms frames the medallion band above and below.
The overall palette — warm peach, camel, rust, sage, ivory — is earthy and inviting, a combination that works effortlessly with natural interiors. Condition is good overall — pile is low and even after professional shearing and washing, edges are hand-stitched, and the piece is fully ready to use.
✦ THE MEANING BEHIND THE PATTERN
In Isparta carpet weaving, the oval medallion border was a weaver's declaration of craft. Unlike the central field — where motifs could be improvised and adjusted as the work progressed — the border required planning from the beginning. The oval cartouches had to be spaced evenly, their internal flowers balanced and complete. A weaver who could execute a clean medallion border was a weaver who understood her loom.
But the oval medallion was more than a technical achievement. In Ottoman decorative tradition, the enclosed oval — the cartouche — represented a contained world: a garden, a story, a moment held still. Each medallion in this border is its own small composition, complete in itself, yet part of a larger rhythm. Together they form a procession — a series of moments, each one whole, moving toward something that never quite arrives.
The floral vine that fills the field above carries the opposite energy: open, moving, uncontained. In Anatolian tradition, this contrast was intentional — the bounded and the free, the structured and the flowing, existing together on the same surface. A rug like this was not decoration. It was a philosophy of living.
