✦ THE STORY BEHIND THIS RUG
This rug was woven by a woman.
Not in a factory. Not by machine. But by hand — on a loom, at home, in a village in Anatolia. Decades ago, Turkish women wove these rugs either to furnish their own homes or to contribute to the family's income. Each pattern was chosen by the weaver herself, each knot tied with her own hands. No two rugs were ever identical, because no two women wove the same way.We source these rugs directly from old homes and private collectors across Turkey — places where these pieces have rested for 40, 50, sometimes 60 years. When we find one, it begins a journey before it reaches you.First, we shake out decades of dust. Then we carefully shear the pile — what we call "hav" in Turkish — to bring the surface back to an even, clean finish.
The rug is then washed and goes through a series of restoration steps. Finally, the edges are hand-stitched to ensure it arrives in your home structurally sound and ready to use. What you receive is not just a rug. It is a one-of-a-kind textile that survived decades, was made by someone's hands, and was carefully prepared to live another chapter — in your home. You will never find another exactly like it.
✦ ABOUT THIS RUG
This runner was hand-knotted in Isparta — one of Turkey's most celebrated rug-weaving cities — and dates to 1989, making it approximately 35 years old. Isparta rugs are known for their fine knotting, rich floral compositions, and the lasting quality of their Anatolian wool. The field is a deep, faded crimson red — a color that has aged magnificently over three and a half decades, shifting from a pure red into something richer and more complex, with lighter areas where the pile has worn most naturally. Across the entire surface flows a dense all-over pattern of botanical vines and floral rosettes, rendered in ivory and charcoal navy. The contrast between the bold red ground and the pale ivory motifs gives this rug a dramatic, graphic quality that feels at once ancient and very current.
The distress on this piece is significant and honest — this is a rug that has lived, and it shows. The surface wear is even, the structure is sound, and the overall effect is one of bold, unapologetic character.
✦ THE MEANING BEHIND THE PATTERN
Red is the most powerful color in the Anatolian weaving tradition. It is the color of life, of blood, of fire. In Turkish village rugs, a red field was never a casual choice — it was a declaration. Red wards off the evil eye. Red brings warmth into a home. Red announces that the people who live here are alive, present, and unafraid.
The all-over floral composition on this runner fills that red field with growth — vines reaching in every direction, flowers opening without hierarchy or center. In Anatolian tradition, this kind of generous, boundary-less pattern carries a specific wish: that life in this home would always be abundant, always branching outward, always finding new space to bloom.A woman who chose red and filled it with flowers was not decorating. She was protecting. She was wishing. She was leaving something behind that would outlast her — which, as you can see, it has.
