✦ THE STORY BEHIND THIS RUG
This rug was woven by a woman.
Not in a factory. Not by machine. But by hand — on a loom, at home, in a village in Anatolia. Decades ago, Turkish women wove these rugs either to furnish their own homes or to contribute to the family's income. Each pattern was chosen by the weaver herself, each knot tied with her own hands. No two rugs were ever identical, because no two women wove the same way.
We source these rugs directly from old homes and private collectors across Turkey — places where these pieces have rested for 40, 50, sometimes 60 years. When we find one, it begins a journey before it reaches you.
First, we shake out decades of dust. Then we carefully shear the pile — what we call "hav" in Turkish — to bring the surface back to an even, clean finish. The rug is then washed and goes through a series of restoration steps. Finally, the edges are hand-stitched to ensure it arrives in your home structurally sound and ready to use.
What you receive is not just a rug. It is a one-of-a-kind textile that survived decades, was made by someone's hands, and was carefully prepared to live another chapter — in your home.
You will never find another exactly like it.
✦ ABOUT THIS RUG
This runner was hand-knotted in the Kars region of northeastern Turkey — one of the most storied weaving centers in the entire Anatolian tradition. Kars sits at the crossroads of Turkish and Caucasian weaving cultures, and its rugs reflect that rich dual heritage: the bold geometric precision of Caucasian design combined with the warmth and symbolism of Turkish tribal artistry.
The field is a deep, rich burgundy red — vibrant and commanding, the hallmark color of the Kars weaving tradition. At the center sits a large stepped geometric medallion in warm camel gold and ivory — symmetrical, bold, and precise. The wide slate blue border is filled with stylized animal and botanical tribal motifs, creating a frame that is as rich and detailed as the field itself. A thin gold line runs through the border — a small but highly distinctive feature characteristic of Kars rugs.
The pile is high and dense — the hallmark of quality Kars wool, sourced from local sheep in the high pastures of northeastern Turkey.
✦ THE MEANING BEHIND THE PATTERN
The stepped geometric medallion at the center of this rug is one of the most powerful forms in the Caucasian and eastern Anatolian weaving tradition. Its stepped edges are not merely decorative — they are protective. In Turkish and Caucasian folk belief, stepped and hooked forms create barriers against harm, warding off the evil eye and keeping what is inside the home safe from what lies outside.
The burgundy field is the color of life itself — of blood, of fire, of the force that keeps things alive and warm. In the Kars tradition, a deep red ground is a declaration: this home is vital, this home is protected, this home is full of life.
The stylized animal motifs in the slate blue border carry ancient symbolic weight. Animals in Anatolian weaving represent fertility, strength, and the connection between the human world and the natural world. They are guardians — placed at the edges of the rug to watch over everything within.
This is not just a rug. It is a piece of the Kars mountain tradition — bold, honest, and made to last for generations.
