✦ THE STORY BEHIND THIS RUG
This rug was woven by a woman.
Not in a factory. Not by machine. But by hand — on a loom, at home, in a village in Anatolia. Decades ago, Turkish women wove these rugs either to furnish their own homes or to contribute to the family's income. Each pattern was chosen by the weaver herself, each knot tied with her own hands. No two rugs were ever identical, because no two women wove the same way.
We source these rugs directly from old homes and private collectors across Turkey — places where these pieces have rested for 40, 50, sometimes 60 years. When we find one, it begins a journey before it reaches you.
First, we shake out decades of dust. Then we carefully shear the pile — what we call "hav" in Turkish — to bring the surface back to an even, clean finish. The rug is then washed and goes through a series of restoration steps. Finally, the edges are hand-stitched to ensure it arrives in your home structurally sound and ready to use.
What you receive is not just a rug. It is a one-of-a-kind textile that survived decades, was made by someone's hands, and was carefully prepared to live another chapter — in your home.
You will never find another exactly like it.
✦ ABOUT THIS RUG
This small rug is cut from a larger Isparta carpet, with the original border preserved at the top and bottom and the side edges carefully finished. The border — a soft blush-pink band with brown geometric details and blue flower accents — is the same character seen in its sister pieces from this collection, suggesting these cuts share a common origin in one exceptional carpet.
The field is an allover trailing vine composition: scrolling stems carrying four-petal flower rosettes and small leaf clusters across a near-white ivory ground. The colors here have faded almost completely — what remains is barely more than a warm whisper of taupe and the faintest suggestion of blush and dusty lavender. The blue in the border has held best, offering the only real note of contrast against the ethereal field.
This is a ghost of a rug — beautiful precisely because of how much it has given to time. For interiors that value restraint, texture, and quiet history, there is nothing quite like it.
The rug is in heavily distressed condition — very low pile, near-total fading, structurally sound with finished side edges.
✦ THE MEANING BEHIND THE PATTERN
The trailing vine in Anatolian tradition is called "rumi" — a word that also names the great Sufi poet Rumi, born in the lands where these rugs were woven. The vine represents the unbroken thread of life, the continuous movement of beauty through time. Every flower it carries is a moment; every stem is the connection between moments.
The blue flowers in the border have a specific meaning in Turkish culture: blue protects. From Iznik tiles to nazar amulets, blue has always been the color placed at the edges of things to guard what lies within. This rug carries that protection at its borders — and a field of quiet beauty within.
