Vintage Turkish Area Rug, Isparta Handwoven Wool Medallion, Distressed Navy Blue Red Ivory, 109.5 x 202.5 cm / 43.1 x 79.7 in / 3.6 x 6.6 ft, Anatolian Floral.
✦ THE STORY BEHIND THIS RUG
This rug was woven by a woman.
Not in a factory. Not by machine. But by hand — on a loom, at home, in a village in Anatolia. Decades ago, Turkish women wove these rugs either to furnish their own homes or to contribute to the family's income. Each pattern was chosen by the weaver herself, each knot tied with her own hands. No two rugs were ever identical, because no two women wove the same way.
We source these rugs directly from old homes and private collectors across Turkey — places where these pieces have rested for 40, 50, sometimes 60 years. When we find one, it begins a journey before it reaches you.
First, we shake out decades of dust. Then we carefully shear the pile — what we call "hav" in Turkish — to bring the surface back to an even, clean finish. The rug is then washed and goes through a series of restoration steps. Finally, the edges are hand-stitched to ensure it arrives in your home structurally sound and ready to use.
What you receive is not just a rug. It is a one-of-a-kind textile that survived decades, was made by someone's hands, and was carefully prepared to live another chapter — in your home.
You will never find another exactly like it.
✦ ABOUT THIS RUG
This rug was hand-knotted in Isparta — one of Turkey's most celebrated rug-weaving cities — and dates to 1976, making it approximately 50 years old. Isparta rugs are known for their fine knotting, dramatic medallion compositions, and the enduring quality of their Anatolian wool.
The field is a deep, faded navy blue — a color that has aged magnificently over five decades into something rich and complex, with areas of lighter distress that give the surface incredible depth. At the center sits a large, ornate floral medallion in ivory and dusty red — symmetrical, layered, and full of botanical detail. The wide border is dusty red, filled with flowing arabesque vines and large corner pieces that anchor the composition at all four corners.
The distress on this piece is significant and honest — fifty years of real life have left their mark on every inch. The structure is sound, the colors are complex, and the overall effect is one of deep, unapologetic character.
✦ THE MEANING BEHIND THE PATTERN
The central medallion on a navy blue field is one of the most powerful compositions in the Anatolian weaving tradition. Navy — or indigo — is the color of depth, of water, of the night sky. In Turkish folk tradition, deep blue is also protective: it carries the same energy as the nazar, warding off ill will and keeping the home safe.
The medallion at the center of this deep blue field is not merely decorative — it is an axis. It represents the point from which all order radiates, the center of a world that is balanced and protected. The ivory floral motifs that bloom from the medallion speak of life and abundance; the dusty red border speaks of warmth and vitality.
A woman who chose navy and red for her rug was making a home that was both protected and alive. That combination — deep and warm, guarded and open — is exactly what a home should be.
In your living room, that protection continues.
