✦ THE STORY BEHIND THIS RUG
This rug was woven by a woman.
Not in a factory. Not by machine. But by hand — on a loom, at home, in a village in Anatolia. Decades ago, Turkish women wove these rugs either to furnish their own homes or to contribute to the family's income. Each pattern was chosen by the weaver herself, each knot tied with her own hands. No two rugs were ever identical, because no two women wove the same way.
We source these rugs directly from old homes and private collectors across Turkey — places where these pieces have rested for 40, 50, sometimes 60 years. When we find one, it begins a journey before it reaches you.
First, we shake out decades of dust. Then we carefully shear the pile — what we call "hav" in Turkish — to bring the surface back to an even, clean finish. The rug is then washed and goes through a series of restoration steps. Finally, the edges are hand-stitched to ensure it arrives in your home structurally sound and ready to use.
What you receive is not just a rug. It is a one-of-a-kind textile that survived decades, was made by someone's hands, and was carefully prepared to live another chapter — in your home.
You will never find another exactly like it.
✦ ABOUT THIS RUG
This small rug is cut from a larger Isparta carpet, with all edges carefully finished. The format is nearly square — unusual in vintage rugs, and particularly versatile as a result. It sits comfortably in spaces where a rectangular rug would feel too directional.
The design is an allover trailing floral vine — large navy blue flower clusters with open petal forms connected by mint and aqua leaf scrollwork across an ivory cream ground. Soft peach and blush accents appear throughout the field, adding warmth to what would otherwise be a cool palette. The navy has held its depth well; the mint and aqua have softened slightly with age into a quieter, more silvery tone.
The overall effect is fresh, airy, and quietly coastal — the kind of palette that feels equally at home in a beach house bedroom and a city apartment bathroom. The rug is in good distressed condition — low to medium pile, natural wear, color vibrancy intact, structurally sound with finished edges.
✦ THE MEANING BEHIND THE PATTERN
The large open flower clusters in this rug — blooms with five or six broad petals surrounding a small center — are known in Anatolian tradition as "gül" motifs, meaning rose. In Turkish weaving, the rose is the queen of flowers, carrying associations of divine beauty, love, and paradise.
The mint and aqua vine connecting each bloom represents the living thread — the continuous growth that links one beautiful moment to the next. Navy blue, as always in Anatolian tradition, protects. The woman who wove this carpet surrounded her roses with the color of safety, ensuring that the beauty she created would endure. It has. It is here now, in your hands.
